Three watches. Three very different approaches to the same problem: helping runners train better without spending $600+ on a flagship. I’ve compared all three over multiple training cycles, and the “best” one depends entirely on what you value most.

The Garmin FR265 is the polished all-rounder. The COROS Pace 4 is the ultralight endurance machine. The Polar Pacer Pro is the underrated value pick.

GPS Accuracy

All three use multi-band GPS, and in 2026 that means they’re all very good. I compared them side by side on track workouts, trail runs through tree cover, and city runs between buildings.

The FR265 and COROS Pace 4 are essentially tied for accuracy. Both nail track intervals within 1-2% and handle tree cover without major drift. The Polar Pacer Pro is slightly less consistent in heavy tree cover but perfectly fine on roads and tracks.

Running Features

Garmin FR265: The most features, period. Training Readiness score, Morning Report, HRV Status, suggested workouts, race predictor, PacePro for pacing strategies, Running Dynamics (with compatible pod), and a massive Connect IQ ecosystem for custom data fields and apps. It’s almost overwhelming.

COROS Pace 4: Focused and clean. EvoLab gives you training load, recovery, VO2max estimate, and race predictions. The structured workout builder is excellent. No music, no apps, no fluff. It does running features incredibly well and nothing else.

Polar Pacer Pro: Polar’s training insights are genuinely unique. Training Load Pro breaks your load into cardio, muscle, and perceived effort categories. Recovery Pro gives you daily recovery status. FitSpark suggests workouts based on your training history and recovery. The running program feature builds adaptive plans directly on the watch.

My opinion: Polar’s training science is the most sophisticated of the three. Garmin’s is the most accessible. COROS is the most focused. If you actually read and use the training insights (not just glance at them), Polar gives you the most actionable information.

Build Quality and Comfort

The COROS Pace 4 at 33g is absurdly light. You genuinely forget it’s on your wrist during hard intervals. This matters more than people think. During a 20x400m track session, those 14 extra grams of the FR265 become noticeable.

The FR265 has the best display. AMOLED, bright, colorful, and responsive to touch. The COROS also has AMOLED now (the Pace 4 added it), but Polar sticks with MIP (memory-in-pixel). MIP looks dated next to AMOLED, but it’s perfectly readable in direct sunlight and sips battery.

All three feel durable. None has sapphire glass at this price point (it’s Gorilla Glass or similar), so screen protectors are smart regardless.

Battery Life

This is where COROS absolutely dominates. 41 hours of GPS recording is double the FR265. If you run ultras, do long adventure runs, or simply hate charging your watch, the Pace 4 is the clear winner.

The Polar Pacer Pro sits in between at 35 hours. Still excellent. The FR265’s 20 hours is adequate for most runners (that’s running 2+ hours daily for over a week), but it’s clearly the weakest here. AMOLED displays eat battery.

In daily smartwatch mode, the FR265 lasts about 13 days, COROS 17 days, and Polar 7 days. Polar’s weaker smartwatch battery is its biggest weakness.

Software Ecosystem

Garmin Connect is the most mature running platform. Years of development, a huge community, Connect IQ for customization, and integration with virtually every third-party app. It’s the safe choice.

COROS’s app is clean and improving rapidly. It lacks the depth of Garmin Connect but it’s faster to navigate and less cluttered. No third-party app ecosystem, which is either a limitation or a blessing depending on your perspective.

Polar Flow is solid but feels slightly dated. The training insights are excellent, the interface is functional, and it integrates with Strava and other platforms. But it doesn’t have the community or third-party ecosystem of Garmin.

Who Should Buy What

Buy the Garmin FR265 if: You want the most complete package. Music on your wrist, touchscreen, Connect IQ apps, and the deepest feature set. You’re OK paying a premium for polish and don’t need ultra-marathon battery life.

Buy the COROS Pace 4 if: Weight and battery life are your priorities. You want a focused running tool without distractions. You run long distances. You want to save $100 over Garmin without sacrificing GPS accuracy or training metrics.

Buy the Polar Pacer Pro if: Budget matters and you value training insights. You want the most sophisticated recovery and training load analysis at the lowest price. You don’t care about AMOLED or touchscreens.

Value Analysis

The Polar Pacer Pro at $280 is the best value here. You’re getting multi-band GPS, excellent training metrics, and 35 hours of battery for $170 less than the FR265. The screen isn’t as flashy, but it works.

The COROS Pace 4 at $350 hits a sweet spot: lighter than both competitors, double the GPS battery of Garmin, AMOLED display, and only $100 less than the FR265.

The FR265 at $450 is the premium option. You’re paying for the Garmin ecosystem, music storage, touchscreen, and Connect IQ. Whether that’s worth $100-170 more depends on how much you value those features.

For most runners, the COROS Pace 4 offers the best balance of performance, weight, battery, and price. It’s the watch I’d recommend to someone who just wants to train well without overthinking it.

But if you’re deep in the Garmin ecosystem with Garmin Connect workouts, Connect IQ data fields, and friends on the platform, switching to COROS isn’t worth the hassle. The FR265 is excellent. Just expensive.

And if budget is tight, don’t sleep on the Polar Pacer Pro. It’s the most underrated watch in this price segment.
